Travel within the CountryCars Traveling by car is an excellent way to see the Australian landscape. However, if you plan on traveling long distances or to remote areas, check on the expected road conditions. Some parts of Australia are very rugged, and flying may be a more sensible and practical option.
In Australia, you drive on the left side of the road, overtake on the right and give way to the right. You must wear a seatbelt, and strict drinking and driving laws are enforced. The legal blood alcohol level is less than 0.05%. Generally, the speed limit in developed areas is 60kph (38mph); on highways it is 100 or 110kph (60-70mph). Another point to remember is that gas is called petrol.
Trains Rail Australia is an association of five government-owned Railway Systems. The national, state and metropolitan networks operate under this banner. Travel by interstate train is not the fastest or the most highly recommended method, unless you would like to view the passing countryside. There are services between many major cities, but not all. Some of these services offer sleepers, restaurants and lounge areas. The two best-known national links are the "Indian Pacific," Sydney-Adelaide- Perth, and "The Ghan," linking Adelaide and Alice Springs. There is a network of countrywide and suburban rail links in most major cities.
